The hardest thing for me about writing, is focusing. When I can focus, I can write and write, but the act of focusing is what gets me. Some days I can get down to work and other days is a wish of ‘good luck, Alice’. But through all of this, I love to write and delve deep into a story in which I have created. When I read what I have written, I’m proud of it and I want to show everyone.
I find trying to write these reflections are harder than writing a story. I find it harder to write about myself in a way that does justice to what I am thinking and trying to convey. In my stories, I am making up a character and I have control over their thoughts and their actions and that is easier to tell their story than it is to tell mine. At the same time, a little bit of my story is weaved through my characters. You can learn a lot about who a person is through their writing.
I realized the importance of planning out a character. Characters become so complex and they are a piece of who you are. They have flaws and triumphs and scars and fears and goodness and they’re human—fictionally human, of course. These characters I have grown have depth and I want to be friends with them in real life. That would be amazing. Each of my characters are either inspired by aspects of my life or the aspects of the people around me.
My writing style is very detailed and immersive. I write in a way that mimics the way I would talk to somebody. There is a ton of internal thought monologues, weird thoughts, and multiple sentences that may or may not make sense. I am not the best at grammer hence why Grammarly and I have become best friends. We help each other out—a symbiotic relationship if you will.
There are at least three-four stories that I really enjoyed writing. I loved writing “I am ____, in a _____, and I want to ______” piece. I never finished it and looking back on it, I want to change it around. Change some names and fully plan out the story line along with the characters. It is a story I have a passion for, but I want to start over. The other ones are the Archetypes, Apocalypse, and Steve the Antag. Looking back, I want to name all those stories, giving them a creative title that grabs and intrigues a potential reader.
I am not a fan of my collaborative writing piece. I wished I started my story off with a different scene. I tried to add some more details to it, to hopefully make it more interesting to me, but I just don’t like how the story came out. What I did like about this exercise was getting my classmates idea on how the story should progress.
I really am going to miss Creative Writing going into the next semester. I learned a lot, especially about who I am as a writer and how I like to write. I’m excited to see where my words and ideas will take me next.
